Jessica Jonggowisastro Dominates NZ U19 Championships

Jessica Jonggowisastro (18), North Harbour, showed she is all class at the New Zealand under 19 Championships, winning all three titles: girls singles, girls doubles and the mixed doubles.  Jessica was also the top player in the North Harbour team which won the inter-association final.  Jessica has gone through the entire event only dropping one game which was in a mixed doubles quarter-final match.

Jessica has taken a year off international badminton as she is studying at Otago University with the aim of gaining entry into Dentistry.  This was the second tournament she has played all year, winning the North Harbour Open earlier in the year.    Jessica’s lack of match play in recent months makes her wins even more impressive; she is a player with a very bright future on the world stage

Jessica totally dominated Waikato’s Amanda Brown in the final of the girls singles with world class shot selection and execution covering the court with apparent ease not allowing Brown play her usual game as she was under constant pressure.

Luke Charlesworth (17) did what his father, Dave, did 36 years ago,  won the New Zealand under 19 boys singles title.  Dave has been in Christchurch in the role as Coach for Luke all week making the title even more special.    Charlesworth played Brock Matheson in the final, the first game was close all the way which could have gone either way but it was Charlesworth who hung on to take it 26-24 and then running away with the second game 21-12.  Charlesworth then combined with Matheson to win the boys doubles in what was the only final which went to three games, defeating the Oud brothers Dhanny and Riga from Auckland.  Charlesworth was also runner-up in the mixed doubles
