STINGERS CONFIDENT AHEAD OF NSW COUNTRY CLASH

BRISBANE UNDER 16 has sounded an ominous warning to New South Wales Country ahead of their clash on July 14 after a dominant display away to Ipswich on Friday, 27 June.

Warming up for the interstate match at Carina on July 14, the Stingers posted a 22-4 victory over its South East Queensland rival and will now brace itself for a Country side keen for a good hit-out before facing Queensland Maroons on July 19.

Stingers Team Manager Barry Knowles said he was optimistic about his side's prospects ahead of the July 14 meeting.

"The game against NSW country is going to be a tough one. In saying that, if all our players perform to their ability and potential we will have a great chance in coming away with a win," Mr Knowles said.

Knowles gave special praise to the Brisbane engine room and two players in the backline in particular, adding he believed many of the players were set for bright futures in the game.

"Our forwards led the way throughout the match which provided some great opportunities for our outside backs in particular Keiran Flynn. Special mention would also go to Ray Peni who defended well and scored 2 great tries," Mr Knowles said.

"There is no doubt that all players stood up in this game and proved they are quality players that can go on to much bigger and better things in the future. Brisbane is certainly blessed with an abundance of high quality players in the under 16 age group."

The Brisbane-NSW Country match will kick-off at 8:30pm on Monday, 14 July at Carina JRLFC, and will be preceded by the second match of the 1909 Commemorative Series between Brisbane and Ipswich at 7:15pm.

Meanwhile, GBJRL Zone 4 Chairman Neil Gilmour has described Brisbane Under 14's defence throughout the City/Country Cultural Exchange at Ipswich over the weekend June 28-29 as "absolutely outstanding".

The young Stingers side conceded just six points in four matches of football as it piled on a combined total of 138 points against South West, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Wide Bay.

12 Brisbane players touched down at the carnival, with Tre Hain scoring one try in each of the four matches to finish as the team's highest try-scorer.

Callum Davies was also in the thick of the action, scoring three tries and kicking 14 goals for a total of 40 points.

However, it was the side's commitment without the ball that impressed Gilmour the most.

"Their defence was absolutely outstanding. To concede only one try in four matches against quality opposition is a superb effort," Mr Gilmour said.

Brisbane's Under 13s will also be given the opportunity to showcase their talents against the best that Queensland has to offer when they travel to Blackwater for the Blackwater Exchange on July 4-5.

The side will face off against South West and Wide Bay on Friday, 4 June, before taking on Central and Gold Coast/Ipswich the following day.
