Kalou shines again - Under 23's

SEKONAIA Qaraniqio Kalou is already making a name for himself after another brilliant performance in the Fiji U23's narrow loss to Australia U23 35-27 on Day 4 of competition.

The 23 year old University of the South Pacific student who has represented the country in school boys rugby, basketball and surprisingly in the sport of archery has made the individual brilliant player list every time his team has taken on the court from Day 1.

It was a much-improved performance from the team that has failed at trying to maintain their consistency and intensity in previous matches.

Fiji did everything right during the game, but simple mistakes came simply through their failure to maintain their concentration.

While, Fiji played extremely well, Australia's edge came in the form of their captain Gerard Murphy who displayed outstanding leadership skills to push his players on. as Fiji tailed them all the way.

The graduate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology playing at Centre was subbed off in the second quarter and returned in the fourth as Fiji were beginning to threaten their position.

Australia had a high percentage miss rate at the net missing an average of five goals in each quarter for a total of 23 misses in the presence of Qaraniqio and pair Samisoni Vugakoto.

In contrast Fiji missed 12 attempts.

Australian Goal Defender Nicholas Ebner was equally outstanding but difference in height against Fiji's Apenisa Kubutawa saw the latter putting in more of his fair share..

Perhaps, if the Fijians were more focused as their Australian opponents, scores could have been much closer or better.

But as Mr Turk said yesterday, the one major thing Fiji and Cook Islands lacked was to be focused for the full 15 minutes.

"That is one major weakness I can see, no doubt they can play and are talented but concentration comes in highs and lows during their games - its not constant,'' said Turk who is also the U23 Australian coach.
