Hoping history fashions success

CYGNET'S traditional black and white will come out of retirement today for the club's SFL clash with Kingborough at Cygnet.

One of Australia's oldest and most successful football clubs, Cygnet will honour its 1974 premiership team by wearing black and white, the colours it donned for a century.

Club president Brett Direen said yesterday most of the '74 premiership team, which was coached by Ray O'Rourke, would be on hand for the reunion celebrations, the match to be played against the same side Cygnet beat for the flag 35 years ago.

``We'll have at least three-quarters of the side there on the day,'' Direen said.

The '74 premiership was Cygnet's seventh in 11 years and one of 45 since the club joined the Huon Football Association as Lovett in 1906.

The club started in 1888 as Lovett and changed its named to Cygnet in 1914.

The black and white it wore for a century was replaced by a Port Adelaide-style guernsey in 1998 when the club joined the SFL.

``The '74 premiership was part of a golden period for the club,'' Direen said.

``Ray O'Rourke was a pretty high-profile signing because he played a few games for Geelong and was a good player at Hobart and he was a great coach for our club.''

Cygnet expects a strong turnout for the reunion.

``The footy club is the heartbeat of Cygnet, a very important part of the town,'' Direen said.

Kingborough is fifth on the ladder and The Port is ninth.

But Direen hopes history will be repeated.

``We'll go into the game underdogs but it's a day when we traditionally lift because of the history of the occasion,'' he said.

``A lot of club legends will be there so the players want to do well, with the history being celebrated.''
