Premier Division starts this Saturday 21 April

The Victorian Women’s Football League Premier Division season starts this Saturday when VU St Albans Spurs take on the Darebin Falcons in a rematch of the 2011 Grand Final. Eight senior & eight reserves teams will compete in Premier Division over a 14 week home and away season followed by finals.

In 2012 the VWFL has a record 32 teams competing across Premier Division (seniors & reserves), North West & South East Divisions.

The teams competing in the Premier Division in 2012 are; Berwick Hawks, Darebin Falcons, Diamond Creek Demons, Eastern Devils, Melbourne Uni Mugars, Scoresby Magpies, Sunbury Lions, St Kilda Sharks & VU St Albans. All clubs compete in both seniors & reserves except Scoresby (seniors only) and Sunbury (reserves only)

In 2011 VU St Albans took their game to a new level as the worked very hard to break Darebin’s stranglehold on premiership. In round 4 the Spurs became the 1st team to beat the Falcons since 2006 and after Darebin struck back in the semi finals the Spurs recorded a resounding win in the Grand Final to take home the cup. The Spurs will be missing inspirational skipper Shannon McFerran in 2012 as she prepares for the arrival of twins. The mighty Falcons only losses in 2011 were to the Spurs and they will be determined to bounce back in 2012 under new coach Richard Dal Pos.

In 2011 Diamond Creek failed to make the Grand Final for the first time since 2008 and they will be more determined than ever to get back on the big stage. Eastern Devils have a new name and will also be keen to push on with their marked improvement in 2010 & 2011. Berwick under new coach Shaun Smith who has played the game at the highest level will be pushing for a finals berth in 2012. The Mugars are also on the up having a number of Youth Girls pushing into the VWFL in 2012.

St Kilda have retained Brad Mogford as coach and have an influx of new players on the track with up to 40+ players training regularly. The Sharks will be expecting an improved year on field in 2012. Scoresby have a new coach in 2012 and have also developed a Youth Girls side playing in the EFL, this can only help the Magpies development moving forward.

In the reserves competition Darebin struck back after a 2 point loss in the semi final to beat the Spurs in the Grand Final. All clubs will be working hard in 2012 with Sunbury particularly determined to have a good year as they work towards having both a senior & reserves team in 2013.
