Last Saturday's try outs for the first ever Victorian Secondary School Girls Team were a resounding success. Ninety girls from all across Victoria put their best foot forward in working towards a place in the squad of twenty-five that will travel to Maroochydore in July for an exhibition competition that will include Western Australia and Queensland in School Sport Australia's national football championships.
A mix of girls who play in AFL Victoria's Youth Girls competitions, junior community football leagues and school teams, as well as gilrs who don't have the opportunity to play in of these competitions, were put through their paces by well credentialed coach,Shannon McFerran. McFerran, the current senior Victorian team captain and five time Helen Lambert medallist, is also St Albans' Youth Girls coach. Whilst the aim of the selection team was to identify a twenty-five girl squad to represent Victoria, the depth of talent in the group meant that thirty girls were identified to return again for further training, with the final cut to be made on July 1.
AFL Victoria is very excited to see the results that this new program will bring, and will see girls in Victoria having all of the same representative opportunities that boys now have.
