Torrential rain greeted both Sunbury and Mercy College as they contested the fifth Western Youth Girls grand final. Undefeated since the 2006 grand final, Sunbury were always going to the favourite to take out this year's title. With a one point defeat to Sunbury in their last encounter, Mercy College appeared to be the main threat to Sunbury's record-equalling attempt. Sunbury's class shone early as they kept Mercy scoreless in the first quarter, and kicking a couple of majors of their own to open up a sizable lead in difficult conditions. Mercy fought back with some excellent pressure and tackling to bring themselves back into the game but by half time Sunbury enjoyed an eighteen point lead. In the second half, Mercy finally found the goals and seemed to be mounting a serious challenge as the fourth term started. Mercy in keeping Sunbury scorelesss in the last quarter, couldn't convert enough of their own forward opportunities to bridge the game that was essentially created in the opening quarter. On the final siren, Sunbury led by fifteen points (4.2-2.3) to claim their third title in as many years, with Mercy looking to be a formidable force in 2010. Best on Ground was awarded to Sunbury's Kirsty White.
