AFL Tasmania announced that the next club to be inducted into the prestigious Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame for 2013 - ‘Great Club’ category - is the Latrobe Football Club.
The Latrobe Football Club deservedly takes its place amongst the ‘Great Clubs’ of Tasmanian Football and the official induction will take place on Friday 5 July at the Hall of Fame gala function at Wrest Point.
With a population of a little less 3,000 people, Latrobe’s record of contribution to football and its is significant – boasting fifteen senior premierships, one State flag and a list of illustrious players that have pulled on the navy and red since the club was formed in 1881.
Along with regular Tasmanian interstate representatives Joe Murphy, Len Lawson and Vin Waite and dual Wander Medallists Bob Hickman and John Jillard, Latrobe has also been home to four champions - Ivor Warne-Smith and Darrel Baldock - both highly regarded Australia-wide, and regional champions Harry Coventry and Ellis Maney, two of Latrobe’s most favorite sons.
AFL Tasmania’s Chief Executive Officer Scott Wade said ‘It’s fantastic to be here in Latrobe today immersed in the history of a great club that now takes its rightful place alongside those already honoured by their induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.’
‘This is not Latrobe’s first induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame, in 2012 the club’s team of 1970 was inducted as the legendary team, coached by the great, late Darrel Baldock, ‘ Wade said.
Latrobe is the first ‘Great Club’ to be inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame that hasn’t had a direct link to a State League club.
