AFLWB Round 1 games cancelled

All games in round 1 were cancelled either due to the condition of the ground or the unavailability of other grounds. The ovals have had between 240mm and 480mm of rain this month with most of that in the last ten days. The already damaged ovals would have struggled to recover for future games if they were all damaged this weekend.

Brisbane Lions Roar into Wide Bay

In a first for the area since 2003, the Brisbane Lions have mutiple players and a coach visiting the region to promote AFL and the LIons themselves. It is a packed out schedule with school, hospital and community visits throughout the three main centres. With the Brisbane Lions tea already sold out, it will be fantastic two days ahead and looking forward to the region supporting the trip.

CLUB SIGN ON DAY - 18th FEBRUARY

All Clubs will be kicking off all together with all clubs holding a registration day on the 18th February. Clubs are available in Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and Maryborough. The full list of clubs is provided on the attached page and registrations will begin from 10am. Registrations are for Auskick, Juniors, Youth and Seniors and is one of the cheapest registrations in the Wide Bay!!

NEW U18 TEAM OFF TO A ROCK SOLID START WITH STONE APPOINTED COACH

Premiership coach, Shaun Stone, will lead the new U18 team entering the A grade for it's first ever year. The appointment is a coup for the new team and the direction it is hoping to take. AFL Development Manager Rob Searle is pleased by the new appointment and believes that the new team has been lucky to have someone of Stones calibre in place early. "Shaun has had a decorated playing career and has achieved the ultimate in coaching as well. It was important that the coach was someone that had the right philosophy towards coaching and teaching the young players, as well as having been involved in the higher levels of football as recently as possible"

AFLWB SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR UMPIRES MANAGER

AFLWB Inc is calling for expressions of interest in the position of Umpires Manager in 2012. The position does have a renumeration involved and potentially could also be split into a North and South combined Managers role to cater for the distance.

COACH REQUIRED FOR NEW A GRADE U18 TEAM

In a great move for 2012, there will be an U18 team enter the A grade competition as the 6th team. The best available U18s, along with some overage assistance, will pit themselves against the rest of the competition in the same way the Gold Coast has in the AFL. We are currently seeking applications for potential coaches and assistant coaches for the new side. The new side is also looking for overage players interested in joining the side for an exciting year!

2011 YOUTH TEAM OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

On Sunday 2nd October, the first ever youth awards for AFL Wide Bay were held at the Hervey Bay RSL. The awards will now be an annual event and will not only allow the rep players to recieve more recognition, but also allow the 15s and 17s vote count in front of a wider audience. Brenton Philp took out the U15 Association Best and Fairest while Josh Gale took out the U17 award. Both were very close counts with three players tying for third in the 17s.

Strength and Conditioning Course

In March 2011, the Wide Bay TAFE in Hervey Bay will be presenting a Strength and Conditioning Course (ASCA) for all interested participants. The course will be mostly done online with a one day practical teaching and assesment. The cost will be $350 and you can book a spot by emailing Clinton Robertson at clinton.robertson@deta.qld.gov.au

STATE SCORPIONS SQUAD ANNOUNCED

Congratulations Sam Daff and Rory Pope on making the initial squad as well as 'expats' Jock Oates and Hayden Thick. This squad will have players deleted from it and, more improtantly, added to it over the next three months as they try to find the top 50 kids in the state.

WIDE BAY U18s DOMINATE COUNTRY SOUTH SELECTION

Wide Bay U18s played off against the Darling Downs U18s in a new format to select players for the Country South Team. 12 players (and an emergency) qualified for the team which will play against North and Central in Rockhampton for the final selection of the State Country Kookaburra's. A healthy group of keen young footballers and their parents turned up at the AFL Wide Bay office to kick off this years Summer Training Program. It was a great opportunity to not only learn about the plans for this summer and the upcoming rep season, but also learn more about their bodies and how to look after them.

INJURY RAVAGED TIGERS GO DOWN IN ROCKHAMPTON

BUNDABERG HOSTS THE 14S KOOKABURRAS

ATW was the host for the Southern State Country U14 Carnival over the June long weekend. The Carnival was split this year with a Northern division playing at Cairns. Whilst the Wide Bay side used it as a learning curve against good opposition, four locals made the enviable step up to Kookaburra status.

STATE U16 CHAMPS STARTED TODAY

Whilst it was a poor start on the scoreboard for the Kookaburras (Jake Nagy, Hayden Thick, Jock Oates) and the Colts (Greg Knox), our guys all performed well. Both Knox and Thick made the best players and reports on Nagy and Oats were all positive. Results are in the NEWS section and I will add the other two rounds as soon as they are available.

WIDE BAY KEEPS PRODUCING KOOKABURRA'S

The U16 Wide Bay side round out a suuccessful carnival with selections in the State Country side. The Kookaburra's selection saw Hayden Thick, Jock Oates and Jake Nagy make the side. ATWBundy Eagle called up for QLD Country Kookas

Ryan Patterson from Across The Waves Bundaberg AFC Eagles has been called into the U/18 Country Queensland Kookaburra Squad as a result of changes made following the Kookaburras mixed results of a win against the Western Taipans on Feb 23 and the a loss to the South East Bushrangers on Feb 26 during the first leg of the U/18 Queensland Development Championships.
