UNDER 18 STATE GIRLS BEATEN BUT NOT DEFEATED

To give you an idea of how dominant Victoria are in Women's Football, Victoria have never lost a game against Queensland....ever.  The closest Qld have got to beating the Victorians was in the recent National School Sports AFL Championships where the Under 16 team drew with Victoria!

So for Queensland to lose their final game by 13 points really put a fright into the Victorian camp.

The first game was a bit of a sharp learning curve for Queensland.  After keeping the margin to just 10 points at halftime, Victoria came out and showed great skill and run out of defence as well as the ability to hit targets.  Our pressure was fantastic and tackling exceptional.  If not for a few lapses in concentration in the 3rd & 4th quarters the final score of 4.8.31 - 10.15.75 may not have looked quite as bad.  The score however didn't really reflect the competitiveness of the game between the two sides.

In the second game a notable difference for Queensland was the movement of the on-ballers and the forwards to make space and lead.  Winning the toss Queensland kicked into a decent breeze for the first and third quarters and struggled to get the ball out of the half back line.  Heading into the fourth quarter with a scoreline of 2.3.15 to Victoria's 6.20.56, Queensland were hanging in their because of inaccurate shots on goal from Victoria.  However with the breeze behind them Queensland came home with a wet sail to be only beaten by the siren kicking 5 goals 5 to Victoria's 1 goal 1.  A very satisfying way to finish a promising tour.  Final score 7.8.50 to 7.21.63.

Also congratulations to Vice-Captain Jasmine Boyers who who the Qld Player of the Tournament on 9 points over Captain Katie Brennan on 4 points and last year's winner Indy Sleeth on 3 points.  Victoria's Player of the Tournament was Captain Alicia Eva who finished on 8 points followed by Georgia Punton & Nicola Stevens who both finished on 3 points.  Votes were given by umpires and the coaches.

A big thank you to firstly Coolangatta AFC and especially President of the club, Peter Damaskinos who was a great support to the success of the Interstate Challenge and also to Youth Girl's Football.   Also thank you to Will Fozard and Mark Frazer who coached the girls.  It is always a challenge in girls football to be able to get girls to training consistently and to inspire them to believe in themselves but they both did a great job.  Also thanks to Neridah Mann for managing the team and making sure that people were where they were supposed to be at the right times!!!

Good luck to all the girls who are no longer eligible for our State Under 18 Youth Girls team anymore and hope to see you all in our Women's league Competition in 2010.
