Teams from Brisbane North, Brisbane South and Cairns all competed for the right to be the State Champions in this first for WomenâÂÂs Football in Queensland.
Not only did this provide a great opportunity for women to play representative football at a higher level, but it provided a great platform for the Queensland Selectors to have a look at the potential there is in the state for the upcoming Nationals which will be held in Perth in June. A 32 player squad will named on Tuesday 5 May which will later be reduced to the travelling 24.
Despite Brisbane South resoundingly beating Brisbane North on Friday evening, Brisbane North came back well in their back to back games to beat Cairns in a tight game where only 10 points separated the teams at three quarter time. For the Sunday fixture most people were expecting Brisbane South to come out quickly against Cairns and assert their dominance, however Cairns showed great fight to be leading by a point at three quarter time. Cairns, who normally compete in a summer competition, went down fighting the last quarter where some inaccurate kicking left them thinking what could have been.
A fantastic performance by all the teams and one which we hope will continue in the future. Thanks to all the Team Coaches and Managers for their support of this intiative.
