The Western Magpies had won the right to play in the Women's League Grand Final by upsetting Logan in the semi-final at Logan two weeks ago. Unfortunately it was a different team that turned up on Grand Final day to verse the 3 time Premiership team.
By halftime Logan had run away to a 32 point lead and looked home and hosed until Western Magpies kept Logan to a scoreless quarter to give some hope to the sizeable Magpies supporter crowd.
In the third quarter, Lisa Thompson kicked what ended up being the Western Magpies only goal for the game with Logan going on to score three more goals in the final quarter to be runaway winners 1.3.9 - 8.7.55.
Katie Brennan from the Logan Cobras deservedly won Best on Ground in a consistent performance to pip her All-Australian team mate, Aasta O'Connor who also was dominant around the ground, especially in the first half.
A great year for the Western Magpies. After not having had a win over the past 3 seasons it was refreshing to have a new side in the final to take on the might of Logan.
Congratulations to Logan Cobras for season 2009 and we look forward to 2010 and hopefully another successful season.
Congratulations also to Belinda Blay from Western Magpies who won the 2009 Brisbane Women's League Best and Fairest with 15 votes over Sally Cooper from Morningside with 10 votes and Aasta O'Connor from Logan with 9 votes. Also congratulations to Katie Brennan from Logan who took out the Goal Kicking Award with 29 goals for the season.
