In a role different from his usual dashing midfield play, Adam Mackenzie was pushed into the forward line making an immediate impact. His long kicking proved essential to Southport five goal lead heading into the quarter time break.
In the second term, the Gold Coast boys picked up where they left off before a free kick close to goal handed Churchie the ability to cut back the margin. With an increase in aggression, the team struck again, landing a second goal in quick succession. However, at times Churchie’s attack on the ball was too strong with tackles slipping high and tensions heating up. Southport once again got the better of them though, finishing the quarter strongly and increasing their lead.
In the second half, both teams worked hard but the might of the Southport side was far too strong. The combination of speed and intensity, typified by utility Alec Jones proved essential as the side ran out sixty point winners
