The Rockets Women Premier League Season Opener

The Rockets Women Premier League Season Opener

The North Adelaide Rockets women opened the 2015 Premier League season with a 16 point win over the Eastern Mavericks. The girls knew that as reigning champions, 2015 would not be an easy season as they will definitely be recognised as the team to beat. The Rockets women knew they were in a for a tough match, especially with the addition of Mavericks import Demetria Frank.

It was head coach Brenton Johnston’s first game back at North Adelaide as Senior Women’s coach in the Premier League. His assistant for the season is long-time North Adelaide coach John Della-Pia. Much like the girls, both coaches were eager to get their first win on the board and to really set the tone and standard of what to expect from North Adelaide Women this season.

As expected, the girls were quite rusty at the start of play, however despite first game nerves and fumbles, the girls were able to finish the first quarter with an 8 point lead.

The Rockets pounced on the inexperience and vulnerability of the Mavericks guards with plenty of front court pressure. This allowed North to cause a number of turnovers which were converted into baskets. The Rockets entered half time with a 17 point lead.

The girls suffered a third quarter slump, allowing the Mavericks to outscore them 17-13. This was due to turnovers, poor shot selection and undisciplined offence.
Fortunately North stabilised in the fourth quarter and utilised their experience to draw away from the Mavericks and record a solid win.

League legend Jo Hill finished the game with a double double (19 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists). Jamie-Lee Peris was also solid for the girls, finishing off the game with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The girls have a long way to go to win back to back Championships. There are many improvements to be had, but the girls are more than prepared to put in the hard work and effort over the coming weeks.

Next game is on Saturday 21st March, 6:30 pm at Hillcrest Stadium.
