Eltham Basketball inaugural Youth 23/Under Men’s Competition

Eltham Basketball hosted the inaugural Youth 23/Under Men’s Competition throughout the early months of 2014. The focus of the competition is for teams to represent a junior club/association. For some clubs, it is their chance for players to still represent their club in a good level of young adult competition, while for others it presents a training ground for future representative players at higher levels. For the first season, competing teams came from Eltham (x2 teams), Koonung, Collingwood and Banyule.

Features of the competition in comparison to normal senior domestic included:

  • Fully timed quarters
  • 24 second shot clock
  • Three man Officiating (3 referees per game)
  • Recorded Scoring Statistics
  • All Star 5 and MVP awards

The Grand Final was played on Wednesday 25th June with Eltham vs Koonung. Both teams had come from 2nd and 3rd to qualify for the final. All competing players for both Grand Final teams were players who had come through the EDJBA competition who still wanted to represent their club in a reasonable standard competition without the costs of other representative competitions. The competition also provided an additional platform for current and aspiring Big V players to improve their game under more suitable game situations than regular senior competitions.

Congratulations to Koonung who won the Grand Final over Eltham 38-32 led by Mark Jeffers with 21 points.

All teams were allowed to vote (5-1 votes) for their League All Star 5 and a League MVP. Congratulations to the following award winners:

Co-MVP Winners: Mark Jeffers (Koonung) and Dan Fayle (Collingwood)

All Star 5: Mark Jeffers, Dan Fayle, Dean Carroll (Eltham Black), Tom Blake (Eltham Red) and James McGilvray (Koonung)
