Big V Youth Championship Season Kicks Off

The Big V season for 2015 has kicked off with the first round of Youth Championship games being held at Dandenong stadium over the long weekend as part of the Big V pre season tournament.

Both our Youth Championship teams where in action for the first time this season, with the women going down to the Dandenong Rangers and the men notching a strong first up performance against the Ringwood Hawks.

Youth Championship Women

It's another young team taking to the court this season after a fabulous effort in 2014 by our Youth Women to make the title game and finish runners up.

A tough match up for the girls first up, taking on the Dandenong Rangers in an effective away game. And the story of the game for the girls was poor shooting, with one good quarter but only managing 24% across the game.

The girls controlled the ball well and pressured the Rangers to force 12 steals across the game, but with the ball not finding the bottom of the net, the Boomers went down 41 - 55.

Amelia Smith led with way with 9 points and 9 boards, while Emma Peace chipped in with 6 points. Coach Gary Fox will certainly be looking for a better shooting performance next week.

Youth Championship Men

New Youth Men Coach Rob Grieve has put together a strong roster for season 2015, retaining the core of last season's team, but adding big man strength with Jack Thornton returning to the Boomers from Eltham and Ernst Kruger coming across from Diamond Valley. Young gun Harry Fayle is also expected to step up his role this season.

And first up, the boys showed they are ready to take the next step this season, comfortably accounting for the Ringwood Hawks 73 - 45.

THe Boomers pretty much controlled the game from the outset, with only a quiet second quarter causing Coach Grieve any concern.

Chris Nave put in a big double double first up, with 23 points and 13 boards. Ernst Kruger showed how valuable he will be to the team this season with 14 points and 9 boards, while Tom Kielty and Harry Falye chipped in with 10 points each.

It's early days, but a great first up effort by the Youth Men.

The Big V season starts in earnest next weekend with all teams taking to the court. Another tough one for the Youth Women who take on last season's title holders Knox in an away fixture on Saturday night.

Our State Champ women and men are back to back in an away double header against the Waverley Falcons on Sunday afternoon.

Our Youth Men host our first Big V home game of the season on Sunday afternoon 15th March at East Doncaster Secondary College with tip off set for 1 pm. It's time to get Big V season 2015 underway in earnest, so get on out to EDSC on Sunday afternoon to support our Youth Men.
