Big V Weekly Wrap Round 2

It was a huge weekend in Round 2 for our Big V teams, with 5 wins from 5 games - a big double from our State Champ Men to get the season rolling, while our Youth Champ Men grabbed their third W on the trot for a great start to the season.

Both our women's teams bounced back after tough early games to register their first win each for the season. And word has it that a new face may appear very soon to further bolster our State Champ Women's team for the season - stay tuned !

Youth Championship Women

After two tough first up games against fancied opponents, our Youth Women bounced back to convincingly defeat the Waverley Falcons 64 - 35.

The girls started strongly with a 22 point first quarter and never looked in danger for the rest of the game. Coach Gary Fox would still not be happy with the low field goal percentage, but that will improve as a young team adjusts to the pace of Big V basketball.

Emma Pearce again showed stellar early season form with 21 points and 9 boards (8 offensive), while Dani Calvisi chipped in with 11 points and 8 boards. Great defensive pressure forced their opponents into 36 turnovers for the game.

The girls are away next week to the Geelong Supercats.

Youth Championship Men

With starter Tom Kielty on the sidelines, this one was going to be no gimme for our Youth Men, up against the Diamond Valley Eagles.

The game was tight early, with neither team able to establish a strong lead, and the Boomers only led it by 2 points at half time. Some great work off the bench by young Shayan Mahboobi helped kick start the offensive and some better team play helped the Boomers edge out to a 10 point lead in the third quarter.

With Freddy Kruger having to sit with foul trouble, Diamond Valley would not go away early in the last. But as they say in basketball the talls never get any shorter, and Kruger and Little were able to steady the ship with easy baskets at critical times and the Boomers held on for a 68 - 60 victory.

Jory Little led the sheet with 15 points and 8 boards, while Ernst Kruger chipped in with 13 points. Roger Oryem added 10 points in some good minutes.

A great 3 - 0 start to the season for the boys, but a big challenge coming up next weekend with an away fixture at the Dandenong Rangers.

State Championship Women

The local darby against the Warrandyte Venom saw our Champ Women searching for their first win of the season and it took a tough overtime game to eke out a 63 - 56 win.

While not playing great basketball, the Boomers looked comfortable early in the game with a 12 point lead at half time. Even when the Venom started to find their range in the third quarter, the lead looked comfortable at 9 points.

But it all went pear shared in the last quarter for the girls, as nothing would drop and a very ordinary 3 of 10 from the stripe nearly costing the game with scores locked at 52 each at the end of regular time.

The girls steadied in overtime and a more reliable 5 from 6 free throws was enough to grab the W. Tennille Nash was solid with 18 points, while Alison Drennan had 14 points and grabbed 9 boards. Philippa Whelan chipped in with 11 points.

Another local match up next week for our Champ Women, taking on the Eltham Wildcats at EDSC on Saturday night.

State Championship Men

A big weekend for our Champ Men, needing to find a win after the big loss to Waverley in the first round. And the boys had back to back games across the weekend to test their endurance.

First up on Saturday night a visit to local rivals the Eltham Wildcats. After an even first half, the Boomers hit their straps in the third quarter with some great shooting to edge out to a 11 point lead and it looked to be enough. But it fell away in the last as the Wildcats start to hit key shots and the Boomers could buy nothing.

It came down to the last possession inside the shot clock with Eltham up by a solitary point. After the timeout, Norton had the ball and attracted the double team on the shot. The dump off went to KGG who had the open look for the win bit it was long off the iron - with time running down KGG followed the shot, grabbed the board and the baseline fade away dropped inside the last second for a stunning 77 - 76 win.

Norton had 16, Beston 14, Cuffe 13 and McDonald 11 in an even team performance. KGG is still adjusting to the game in Oz but grabbed 10 boards and of course nailed the big game winner.

After such a big game on Saturday night, you might expect that the boys could be flat on Sunday as they backed up to take on the Diamond Valley Eagles.

While not a spectacular game, the Boomers were solid and just did what they had to do, running out 88 - 64 winners for a big weekend double.

Scott Cuffe backed up with 22 points, Norton had 19, D Mac chipped in with 11 and Mark Whitehead was valuable off the bench with 10 points.

Our Champ Men are home again next weekend on Saturday night to take on the Hawthorn Magic.

A big double header for our Champ Men and Women next weekend at EDSC on Saturday night, so get on out and support our Big V teams.
