Warringah 4th at Australian Club Champs

30 hardy members turnout out on Sunday at Penrith to race for the club in the Australian Team Championships.  The weather was testing to say the least - cold and very wet.

All the Warringah members were in great spirits and eager to get amongst it.  This was the first time for a few years that we’ve taken a big team to this event.  Many other clubs also took advantage of being able to pay for unlimited entries and were out in force.

In the end Warringah finished fourth on the pointscore in an excellent effort.  We were under represented in a couple of key categories which we’ll look to fill next year.

Highlights of the day included our premier women’s team (Liz, Tracey and Merryn) taking first place by a couple of minutes.  Our premier men’s team were outstanding (Pete, Darren and Ben) in second place being just pipped at the post by the Bilby’s.  Our division three men’s team (Carmello, Ian and Tim) managed a third in their category.  Every single person who raced should be commended for giving 150% on a tough day.  Most of our members were in the new club uniform which looked great streaking around the course.

Congratulations to HERTS, BRATS and Balmoral who took out the first three places overall.  I haven’t seen an official pointscore but I calculate we scored 150 points, just behind Balmoral on 162.

This is a great race that I strongly encourage everyone to consider next year.  The format of being in a team is great fun and drafting on the bike on a 5km flat course is fast and exciting.

A huge thanks to our Dan Howitt, our club coach, who put in an enormous amount of time to get the teams together and entered and sorted out all the last minute changes.  He says he now knows how not to do it next year.

See you all at the club Duathlon next Sunday.
