The decision to move the game from the MCG to Visy Park was made late on Friday because of the poor weather in the days leading up to AFL Grand Final Day.
With a full list of players available coach David Ashkar implored his charges to stay in the moment and enjoy the occasion as they prepared to take on their NSW counterparts.
NSW won the toss and elected to kick with the wind in the first quarter with a soaked surface greeting players that made clean possession almost impossible. The QLD players struggled early with NSW getting on top by not overusing the ball and kicking it long when ever they could.
The QLD backline held strong under constant pressure with Luke Reynolds and James Matthews continually stopping NSW from jumping out to a bigger lead at quarter time.
It wasn’t until the second term that Jesse Wallin (pictured) kicked the Young Scorpions first goal – its only one of the first three quarters before kicking into gear and booting five with the breeze in the final term to take the victory.
The win secured Queensland's fifth under-16 division two title to make it the most successful state for that pool in the history of the championships.
A tough yet skilful contest wasn't ruined by the conditions. Queensland's all-round effort would have pleased Gold Coast recruiters who were watching on and have the job of planning the new franchise's list development.
Papua New Guinean David Meli, an international scholarship holder with Essendon, provided a spark in the last quarter after been given free rein across half forward and had a hand in a number of goals.
Luke Reynolds starred in defence for the first 3 quarters before being shifted into attack and kicking 2 goals with Peter Yagmoor’s long direct kicking from the midfield under difficult conditions a joy to watch.
Luke Chitty and Aaron Laskey provided plenty of run and rebound from defence and midfield with their ability to stay in their feet around contests proving vital.
At the end of the game Laskey was awarded the MVP award for QLD for the 4 championship games and the McLean Medal for best division 2 player in the championships went to another Queenslander, Jackson Allen.
