AFLQ STATE LEAGUE FIELD UMPIRE COACH

AFLQ is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals to undertake the role of State League Field Umpire Coach in 2010.  The individual will be responsible for creating a positive learning environment which facilitates the ongoing improvement of field umpiring performances at the State League level.  The role is critical to the ongoing improvement and development of the current panel of umpires and future elite umpires in South East Queensland.

The scope of the role stretches from responsibilities at the Academy level to developing and preparing umpires to join the AFL umpire panel. In conjunction with the State Umpire manager the successful applicant will select, coordinate and foster a team of assistant coaches to observe, coach and reinforce a positive, energised and professional culture within the panel.    

Position Description

A detailed position description is enclosed in the information pack. 

The role will be offered on a one year casual contract. 

As per the position description the role is required to attend training in Brisbane and Gold Coast training centres and provide direction to the Sunshine Coast and Darwin training centres.

It is anticipated that the role will require 10 – 12 hrs per week out of season and 20 – 25 hours per week in season. 

The appointed individual is required to attend State League matches on Saturday and Sundays during the football season.

Appointment Process

To determine the most appropriate individual, AFLQ will use a two stage selection process.

Stage one: Expression of interest

Interested applicants should forward to the State Umpire Manager a letter expressing an interest in applying for the role.  This should be a maximum of a two pages and contain a brief description of the following:

·     Brief outline of Teaching / Coaching experience and qualifications

·     Leadership experience within an umpire environment or work place environment

·     Umpire or Umpire Coaching qualifications and experience

·     Knowledge of the structure and operation of successful umpire development programs

Applicants will be invited to stage two based on the contents of the document.

Stage Two: Presentation

Successful applicants are required to prepare a 45 minute session which will consist of the following:

·     30 minute presentation

·     15 minutes for questions and answers. 

The presentation will contain a basic outline and description of the following topics:

·     Description of proposed coaching approach and underlying philosophy

·     Basic overview of proposed State League coaching plan and activity plan for 2010 season including special initiatives  

·     Proposed assistant coach strategy including selection / appointment process

·     Basic Umpire Academy activity plan and proposed integration of members into Senior Football

The state Umpire manager is available to answer any questions in relation to the presentation. 

Applicants will have approximately one week to prepare for the presentation.  Presentation can be via Power point or handouts.
