A number of QAFL clubs have already staged their Presentation Nights with the winners of Best and Fairest Awards being announced at Aspley, Broadbeach, Redland, and Southport
At Graham Rd former Noosa midfielder Lucas Matthews capped off a consistent season winning the Hornets Best and Fairest Award from young gun Shaun Tapp and evergreen Brent Evans
Matthews (pictured) easily made the transition from the Pineapple Hotel Cup competition despite travelling down from the Sunshine Coast and is a critical player in Aspleys immediate future. Tapp who participated in the Qld State Draft Screening last weekend has been courted by South Australian clubs but surprisingly hasn’t fielded any interest from the GCFC. Evans the 99 VFL game veteran originally from Port Melbourne was a pillar of strength down back and his experience was essential for the fledgling State League club
At Merrimac Oval State Under 21 co captain Dayne Zorko saluted ahead of reliable ball magnet Matt Fife with former PBC utility Jesse Derrick gaining third place ahead of Mooroopna recruit Simon Russell
It was a fantastic result for Zorko given the horrendous run with injury that the Cats experienced in 2009. His ability to lead what was essentially a very inexperienced side certainly didn’t affect his own personal performance and speaks volumes of his character and resolve
Fife, the former NSW/ACT Rams defender/midfielder from the Riverina was regularly amongst the Cats best and Derrick has developed as part of the Cats rotating midfield
Phil Carse made it two from three Best and Fairest Medals at Bomberland in a season where he made his State debut against Tasmania and finished fourth in the Grogan Medal. He won from another State debutant in Justin Myers who regularly set Redland up from defence. Jeff White had a stellar 2009 season with the Bombers and despite missing two games during the season finished in third place
Adam Oxley won the Redland Rising Star Award whilst Nathaniel Congoo was named Best First Year Player
Justin Kahlefeldt won his first club Best and Fairest at Southport to cap off his best season since arriving from the Ovens and Murray League. Kahlefeldt beat another State debutant in Kurt Niklaus with the Sharks strongman belying most club awards in polling well as a key defender
Ever developing ruckman Broc McCauley rounded the trifecta of State debutants by filling third place. McCauley recently tested well at the Queensland State Draft screening and has generated discussion from several AFL clubs
Club stalwart Darren O’Brien won the coveted Wally Fankhauser Award and along with fellow veteran David James has re committed to the Sharks for 2010.
