“BOMBER” BEST AT MAGPIES

Twenty One year old midfielder Ben Heffernan-Roper has capped off a fine 2009 Velocity Sports Cup season by claiming the Bill Peirce Medal for the Best and Fairest Player at the Western Magpies.

Heffernan-Roper polled 44 votes to be a decisive winner over diminutive midfielder Chris Judson on 29 votes with former Queensland Scorpion and St Kilda Rookie Ed McDonnell a further vote away in third position.

The much decorated Heffernan-Roper who was desperately unlucky to miss selection in the Queensland Under 21 side this year had no problems stepping up from the Pineapple Hotel Cup and should be able to carve out a long and illustrious career in the State League as the Magpies look to improve on 2009 results.

He also won the Best Midfielder Award and McDonnell took out the Best Defender Award with undersized forward Josh Barton winning the Best Forward.

One of the most prestigious awards on the night, the BG Award named in honour of the spirit, memory, and courage of Brett Gwyther was deservedly won by Luke Scott.

Ben Jaenke-Cain won the Rookie of the Year Award.
