CHARMAN SURPRISE OMISSION
Ruckman Jamie Charman is a surprise omission from the Brisbane Lions side to play the Sydney Swans at the Gabba tomorrow night.

Instead coach Michael Voss recalled versatile defender Jason Roe for his first AFL game of the year, preferring to go in with one specialist ruckman in Matthew Leuenberger against the Sydney pair of Darren Jolly and Queenslander Jesse White.

And that after Jolly and White decimated the Hawthorn ruck division last weekend to set up a surprise win over the defending premiers.

Charman, the 128-game 26-year-old who was offered as trade bait over the summer after representing the Dream Team in last year's AFL Hall of Fame Tribute Match, was named in the emergencies alongside fellow Queenslander Scott Harding and Tim Notting.

Roe, who began his AFL career three years ago playing an outstanding game on Sydney's Barry Hall, got his chance after a strong showing in the QAFL Velocity Sports Cup, shutting down Morningside's State centre half forward Kent Abey.

The Swans named an unchanged side including Hall, who is carrying an adductor injury. A final decision will be made after training today (Friday), with Ed Barlow, Kristin Thonton and Mike Pyke the emergencies.

Three other Queenslanders will have an anxious wait ahead of final selection tonight for Sunday games, having been bracketed in the seven-man interchange group that will be trimmed to four.

Hawthorn's Brendan Whitecross, who has played in the first two games of the season, is among the bench group for their clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

The injury-hit Hawks slotted Stephen Gilham and Travis Tuck into the starting 18 as they return from injury, and added Matt Suckling to a bench group of Whitecross, Josh Kennedy, Jarryd Morton, Gary Moss, Ryan Shoemmakers and Mitch Thorp.

North, coming off a loss to the Bulldogs, added Daniel Harris, Josh Smith and forgotten forward Corey Jones to their bench group, alongside Ed Lower, Andrew Swallow, Josh Gibson and Todd Goldstein.

Melbourne's Jake Spencer, who has played the first two games of the season coming off the rookie list, is in their interchange bunch for the AAMI Stadium clash with Port Adelaide.

The Demons selected added to that group fellow ruckman John Meesen, an emergency in the first two rounds, Lynden Dunn and Michael Newton. They are bracketed with Spencer, Kyle Cheney, Nathan Jones and Neville Jetta.

Port will welcome the return from suspension of Dean Brogan after a hammering from West Coast in Perth last weekend and have surprised by dropped livewire David Rodan.

Also without forward Justin Westhoff for four-six weeks with a broken foot, they've added Mat Thomas, Wade Thompson, Matthew Westhoff and Tom Logan to a bench group which also includes Josh Carr, Travis Boak and Toby Thurstans.  It will be Daniel Motlop’s 100th game.

Also, Adelaide's Kurt Tippett was named among the interchange group for Subiaco clash with Fremantle but is fully expected to play after three goals in their loss to St.Kilda last weekend.

The Crows, without Nathan Bock (suspended), Trent Hentschel (knee) and Chris Knights (eye socket), welcomed the return from injury of Scott Stevens and Brad Symes, and recalled Nick Gill and to the starting line-up.

Also, Jonathan Griffin, Robert Shirley and James Sellar have been added to the bench group with Tippett, Bernie Vince, Andy Ottens and Jared Petrenko.

The Dockers, badly beaten in their first two games, dropped Paul Duffield and Scott Thornton and added to the starting line-up Daniel Gilmour and first-gamer Greg Broughton, a Subiaco WAFL premiership player and rookie draft selection from last year.  The medium-sized defender representd WA against Townsville in Queensland last year.

Also, possible first-gamers Matthew de Boer and Zac Clarke have joined Clayton as additions to the Fremantle bench group. Retained in that group from last week were Andrew Browne, Stephen Hill, Nic Suban and Dean Solomon.

In other AFL selection news, unbeaten Carlton, without defender Michael Jamison as they prepare to play Essendon at the MCG Saturday, dropped Heath Scotland as they welcomed the return of vice-captain Nick Stevens from suspension and Shaun Grigg from a hamstring injury. Setanta O''hAilpin was named as an emergency.

The Bombers, coming off a win over Fremantle, included Leroy Jetta for the suspended Adam McPhee.

St.Kilda and West Coast both named unchanged sides for Eithad Stadium clash on Saturday afternoon, which will be Tyson Stenglein's 200th AFL game.

And 2003 Richmond B&F winner Mark Coughlan is in line for his first AFL game since Round 12, 2006, after being included in the Tigers bench squad for Monday's Etihad Stadium clash with the Bulldogs.

The Tigers, coming off an improved showing against Geelong last week, slotted Richard Tambling straight into the starting line-up and added Coughlan and Adam Pattison to the bench group alongside Alex Rance, Jay Schulz, Robin Nahas, Shane Edwards and Angus Graham.

The unbeaten Bulldogs added Andrejs Everitt, Stephen Tiller and Scott Welsh to their bench group alongside Dylan Addison, Daniel Giansiracusa, Liam Picken and Callan Ward.
