Nick Riewoldt has carried the Queensland flag in this year’s Brownlow Medal count.
Riewoldt, the Sunshine State’s only All-Australian selection, polled 12 votes to finish tied for 17th behind surprise winner Adam Cooney of the Western Bulldogs.
North Melbourne forward/ruckman David Hale polled eight votes to finish third in the Kangaroos tally.
The only other Queenslanders to figure in the count were Bulldogs Jason Akermanis (5) and Mitch Hahn (3), St.Kilda defender Max Hudghton (2) and five players who polled one vote each – Brisbane’s Jamie Charman, Josh Drummond and Rhan Hooper, North’s Daniel Pratt and Hawthorn’s Michael Osborne.
Cooney polled 24 votes to beat Brisbane’s Simon Black by one, polling three votes against Essendon in round 21 to snatch the medal from the unlucky Lion.
Black, who won the medal in 2002, has now finished second two years in a row.
Of the other Lions players, Luke Power polled 11 votes and Jonathan Brown 10.
Then came Daniel Bradshaw and Jared Brennan (7), Anthony Corrie and Travis Johnstone (2), Jed Adcock, Charman, Drummond and Hooper (1).
