A healthy crowd of interested friends and family members stood on the sideline on a warm and gusty afternoon at Westminster Park. The game proved to be a lot tighter than the pundits had predicted, which kept the crowd engaged right down to the final siren.
it was not until midway through the last quarter that the "cup" seemed destined for the Bulldog kennel. This followed a stunning effort by the Cougars, who trailed by only 16-points at the last change and had the aid of a 2-3 goal wind gong into the last quarter. They had been kept in the game by a sterling effort from their mid-field, who carrying on from the week before, matched it with the much vaunted Bulldogs counterpart. When the chips were down, however, in the final quarter, it was the Bulldogs who clicked into a higher gear and overran the tiring Cougars. The Bulldogs kicked 4-straight goals in the final stanza, while the Cougars could only manage 1 goal, 2-behinds. The Bulldog's final onslaught followed a lengthy stop in play as young Dan Oliver was carried from the field with a knee injury.
The Bulldogs also pulled off a clean sweep of awards, with Jared (Doc) Kilday winning the Best on Ground Medal, Steven Howard winning the Stratco Best and Fairest award for the 2009 season and the Bulldogs winning the Minor Premiership Cup as well as the grand Final trophy.
Congratulations to all teams and their management on a successful CAFL season. Roll on 2010!
