Cougars women hand Magic first loss of season (Week 6 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars handed the Mandurah Magic women their first loss of 2015 in Sunday's SBL action to close Week 6 while the Magic men got a measure of revenge with an exciting win over the Cougars.

The Sunday action to close Week 6 of the 2015 SBL season began with the women's fixture as the Cockburn Cougars scored the upset 61-57 win over the previously unbeaten Mandurah Magic at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Then at the same venue later in the afternoon, the Mandurah Magic men managed to beat the Cockburn Cougars 114-109.

The women's contest saw the Cougars record the four-point victory to bounce back from having lost to the Wolves by 26 points on Saturday night at home to hand the Magic their first defeat of the season.

Mandurah had opened the 2015 campaign with seven straight wins and had beaten the East Perth Eagles by three points on Saturday at Morley, but came up four points short of the Cougars on Sunday.

Playing-coach Deanna Smith top-scored for Cockburn off the bench with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots while only taking four shots and playing just over 15 minutes.

Katie Loberg added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars with Chelsea Evans contributing 10 points and Taryn Priestly nine points and five assists. Nicole Roberts also celebrated her 200th SBL appearance with the win for the Cougars.

Casey Mihovilovich finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds and eight steals for the Magic as she narrowly missed a triple-double but she did shoot 4-of-24 from the field and 1-of-9 from deep.

Kate Sidebottom also added 12 points for Mandurah while Shelley Boston scored 12 points and Emma Klasztorny 11 to go with eight rebounds.

Meanwhile in the men's contest to close out the round, the Magic beat the Cougars by five points with Mandurah winning a third straight match in the process to improve to a 6-3 record while Cockburn slipped to 5-4.

Captain Taylor Mullenax had a big afternoon for the Magic finishing with 34 points and nine rebounds while shooting an efficient 13-of-18 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Paul Hafford also contributed 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Mandurah with him doing well from beyond the arc shooting 7-of-11.

Ben Smith added 19 points, 14 rebounds, seven blocked shots, four assists and four steals in a tremendous all-round performance as well for the Magic while Rhett Della scored 14 points, Brendan Della 11 points and six boards, and Jarrad Jackson 10 points and four assists.

Eric Millam top-scored for the Cougars with 27 points and 13 rebounds with Najee Lane adding 23 points, nine boards, five assists, three steals and three blocks.

Gavin Field also finished with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocked shots with Sheldon McIntyre adding 14 points and six assists.
