Buccaneers, Hawks score wins to close out round (Week 10 Sunday SBL wrap)

WEEK 10 of the 2015 SBL concluded with two men's matches on Sunday afternoon that saw the Geraldton Buccaneers hand the East Perth Eagles a 13th successive loss and the Perry Lakes Hawks bring the Goldfields Giants winning run to an end at four.

The two Sunday match ups saw the S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers defeat the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 99-84 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, and the Perry Lakes Hawks beat the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 99-92 at Bendat Basketball Centre.

The Buccaneers and Eagles met in another grand final rematch from last year but East Perth continues to struggle in its championship defence.

Coming off losing to the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves by 31 points on Saturday night, East Perth lost to Geraldton at home by 15 points on Sunday with the Eagles having now lost 13 straight matches since winning their opening game of the season.

The Buccs returned to second position in the standings with the win improving to a 12-2 record having backed up a seven-point win over the Bethanie Stirling Senators on Saturday night as well.

Geraldton asserted its authority over East Perth in the first quarter keeping the Eagles to just seven points while scoring 29, and despite the defending champions putting on a 34-point fourth quarter it only reduced the final margin in favour of the Buccaneers to 15 points.

Aaron Ralph led the scoring for the Buccs with 24 points and eight rebounds while hitting 4-of-8 from three-point range.

Bennie Lewis added 19 points, six boards and three assists for Geraldton while Carter Cook finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, Daniel Thomas 18 points, five boards and five assists, and Mat Wundenberg six points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Rhys Vague did all he could to try and inspire the Eagles with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Keanu Pinder contributed 17 points and 10 boards, Sunday Dech 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Jamie Barnett eight points and six boards, and Drew Williamson eight points.

The Giants entered their clash with the Hawks full of confidence having won four straight matches since losing the first eight of 2015, including a 28-point road win over the Mandurah Magic on Saturday night.

However, Perry Lakes backed up its 12-point win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Friday night with a seven-point win to improve to a 4-9 record, with Goldfields also falling to the exact same 4-9.

The Giants started well on Sunday at Bendat Basketball Centre leading 53-50 at half-time, but the Hawks held them to just 11 points in the third quarter to set up the eventual seven-point win.

Bryton Hobbs backed up his tremendous performance on Friday night with another big game for the Hawks finishing with 35 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 14-of-28 from the field.

Captain Ben Purser added 20 points and eight boards for Perry Lakes with Josh Garlepp contributing 10 points and seven rebounds, and Mike Krumel 10 points and seven boards.

Jacob Holmen top-scored for the Giants with 29 points to go with 16 rebounds and shooting 11-of-21 from the floor.

Jay Bowie added 23 points with Mathiang Muo scoring 13 points, Edin Zunic 10 and Russell Hurst eight to go with his nine rebounds.
