Selectors choose Flying Boomerangs squad
Wednesday 18 April 2012
SOUTH Africa beckons for 25 of the country's best Indigenous junior footballers after selectors announced an initial Flying Boomerangs squad of 43 chosen at the recent KickStart championships on the Gold Coast.
In the southern Afican country, the young Boomerangs will play a series of matches against the SA national team, continuing on the international award-winning football program's work of developing the game and its young players.
But before their African odyssey, the Boomerangs will play at this year's AFL national under-16 championships in Sydney in July, joining Western Australia's new North West Academy, coached by former great Phil Narkle, in an expanded competition.
That squad will be culled to 25 before July.
The winning team, Western Australia, provided the bulk of the initial intake with 13 young Sandgropers chosen.
Players from all States and Territories are represented in the squad.
The selectors were AFL triple premiership player with the Brisbane Lions, Chris Johnson, AFL great and Adelaide Crows games record holder, Andrew McLeod and former Saint and Brisbane Lion Xavier Clarke.
