Calcutta Fundraiser For 2010 National Hockey League Teams

5 November 2009
In conjunction with Tuesday's New Zealand Trotting Cup, a Calcutta fundraiser will be held at Trevinos Bar & Restaurant this Monday evening, November 9.  Proceeds will go towards Canterbury's 2010 National Hockey League programs.  A great night's entertainment, with free entry to Trevinos and $10 for each ticket in the Calcutta raffle.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of a Calcutta, basically there is a raffle to determine the 'interim owners' of each of the horses running in the New Zealand Trotting Cup.  1,000 tickets at $10 each are available in the raffle.  Once the raffle is drawn and the 'interim owners' of each of the horses is known, an auction occurs for those in attendance, including the usual racing syndicates that have attended this function for a number of years, able to purchase each horse from its 'interim owners'.  The amount paid for each horse reflects its prospects of winning Tuesday's race, with 50% of the highest bid returned to the 'interim owner'.  The successful bidder of each horse becomes its 'owner' for Tuesday's race.  Based on results on Tuesday, the 'owner' of the winning horse collects 70% of the prize pool created by the Calcutta raffle and auction, second place takes 20% and third takes 10%.

In addition to the Calcutta, horse trainer Tim Butt will be the guest speaker on the night, along with racing personality Dean Lester.

For what promises to be a very enjoyable and potentially lucrative night for those in attendance, hopefully you can make it to Trevinos on Monday, corner of Mona Vale Avenue and Riccarton Road.  Raffle tickets will be available on the night from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, with the auction commencing at 8pm.

If you are unable to be there on the night, but would still like to purchase tickets in the raffle, please contact Canterbury Hockey (email hockey@hockeycanterbury.co.nz).
