2009 V/LINE CUP – U15 SCHOOLBOYS CARNIVAL - A SUCCESS
Over 500 of the best U15 country footballers from across Victoria have successfully played off in the 2009 V/Line Cup in Melbourne this week.
27 matches were played by 18 teams in four divisions over the carnival. A very high standard of football was played in all divisions despite some trying weather conditions over the three days at Waverly, Port Melbourne and Werribee ovals.
The Division 1 title was taken by the Latrobe team, going through the championships undefeated against some strong opposition. This is their first Division 1 title since 1998. The Latrobe team exhibited a high scoring brand of team oriented football. Ovens & Murray finished the carnival in second spot.
Division 2 Champions were Hampden. This is the 5th time in 6 years that the boys from Hampden have been Div 2 champions at the V/Line Cup. They dominated Central Murray in the second half of the play-off game at Waverly yesterday.
Division 3 champions were the Geelong 2 side who were also undefeated at the end of the Carnival after accounting for the Peninsula Stingrays in the final game yesterday.
In their first year in the Carnival, the Goulburn Murray 2 team were crowned the Division 4 champions.
Large crowds were present across all three days of the Carnival with many parents and friends making the journey, along with talent scouts from across the state.
Teams were treated to a special function at the MCG on Monday night to celebrate the staging of the 2009 V/Line Cup. EX AFL star and V/Line Ambassador Nathan Thompson was joined by AFL Victoria’s High Performance Coach Leon Harris to run the boys through the pathway to the elite level of football, while receiving a series of exclusive presentations on the big screens at the ‘G.
