The Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL has unveiled a star-studded side for its Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championships clash against the Ellinbank District Football League at Princes Park this Saturday, with a high emphasis on versatility.
The side, announced yesterday, features players from eight of the MCDFNL's 14 sides, with, as expected, plenty of talent featuring from the competition's top sides, Navarre, Carisbrook and Lexton.
Under former Carisbrook senior coach Luke Treacy, who takes the representative coaching role for the first time after serving as an assistant coach under Shane Fisher last year, the side looks to be packed with players who can fulfil a variety of roles around the ground, while also featuring plenty of pace and goal kicking firepower for Saturday's clash at Princes Park.
Lexton's Lachlan Murray, who can also swing forward, Royal Park key defender Chris Cowan and his Tigers teammate, Taylor Stewart look likely to start on the last line of defence, with both Murray and Stewart capable of turning defence into attack, while Cowan will likely get the job on one of the Ellinbank side's key forwards.
At half-back, Carisbrook swingman Adam Hurse will likely take the other key defensive post, supported by Lexton's Nick Spolding and Talbot coach Matthew Smith, both of whom will generate a huge amount of run from half-back.
The centre line could be filled by plenty of options, but the most likely starting set-up appears to feature the pacy Jimmy Templeton (Lexton) and Natte Bealiba young gun Tom Douglas on the wings, with Navarre co-coach and gun midfielder Daniel Parkin likely to start in the middle, as well as being the number one candidate for the captain's job.
Across the forward line, the MCDFNL boasts plenty of goal kicking options, with Carisbrook trio Nathan Wright, Kurt Bruechert and Cole Roscholler seemingly set to start across half-forward, leaving Redbacks speedster Matt Bilton, who will no doubt spend plenty of time in the middle of the ground, Navarre key target Ash Driscoll and Lexton straight-shooter Matt Brown to fill the full-forward line.
Navarre youngster Josh Fowkes appears set to be named as the side's starting ruckman, which is just reward for his strong start to the season, with Harcourt captain Paul Chaplin and reigning Berry Powell medallist, Damon Aspland as the side's rovers.
Treacy has plenty of options available to him on the interchange bench tomorrow, with Navarre duo Louis Hannett and Cody Driscoll, Trentham rising star Callan Wellings, Royal Park utility Murray Bond and Talbot's Luke Kemp all set to offer different options once injected into the contest.
The team looks to be one of the strongest the MCDFNL has fielded in the interleague competition in a number of years, and should give a good account of themselves and represent the league well against the evenly-matched Ellinbank DFL on Saturday.
