The Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League was found wanting in their Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championship game against Ellinbank District Football League at Princes Park on Saturday, going down by 45 points.
Ellinbank signalled their intentions from the very beginning of the game when they had three goals on the score board from their first three forward entries - a sign of things to come as the MCDFNL defenders were under pressure for the entire game with Ellinbank looking a polished, well drilled outfit. The EDFL moved the ball with precision, whilst the MCDFNL was constantly under pressure resulting in many turnovers throughout the game.
While the EDFL found their forwards with precise use of the ball, the MCDFNL had to fight hard to break the opposition defensive lines, which they eventually did late in the first term when Lexton teammates Damon Aspland and Nick Spolding combined to see Spolding goal under pressure. This was followed by a great mark from Navarre’s Cody Driscoll which brought the crowd to life, and his resultant goal brought the margin back to 13 points at quarter time.
The pressure applied by the EDFL allowed the MCDFNL to only score one goal in the second term, while Ellinbank ran rampant with 12 shots on goal resulting in a further six goals to their tally to have the game well and truly in their keeping at the main break, leading by 45 points.
It was a more competitive second half from the MCDFNL, however the game was well in the keeping of the opposition at three quarter time as the EDFL took a 57 point margin into the final term. To their credit, the MCDFNL did not lay down and fought the match out to the end, and it was an inspiring final quarter by the speedy Matt Bilton who actually kicked five final quarter goals to lead the way as the MCDFNL outscored the opposition by 12 points to reduce the final margin to 45 points.
Longwarry’s Tye Holland received the AFL Victoria Country Medal as the best player for Ellinbank, while Lexton’s Nick Spolding received the AFL Victoria Country Medal for the MCDFNL
Other players to play well for the MCDFNL were Matt Bilton (6 goals), Chris Cowan, Jimmy Templeton and Cole Roscholler, while young Josh Fowkes battled hard in the ruck.
It was much better news for the MCDFNL’s netballers though, who defeated Ballarat Football Netball League 46-43 in an entertaining game. After trailing by ten goals at the quarter-time break, the MCDFNL worked their way back into the contest to tie the scores 34-all at three quarter time, then outlasted their opposition in the final quarter for a memorable win. MCDFNL captain Jess Williamson was awarded the AFL Victoria Country medal as the best player on the court.
The preliminary draw for the 2016 Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championships has the MCDFNL drawn to play the Alberton Football Netball League whilst Ellinbank is set to face the Horsham & District Football Netball League.
