Congupna’s undefeated
season culminated with a
37-point victory against
Deniliquin in Saturday’s
under-14 grand final at
Tocumwal.
Bruce Fuller’s side held
Deniliquin goal-less in the
first half on its way to a 9.12
(66) to 4.5 (29) win in the
premiership decider.
‘‘The boys were pretty
calm before the game. They
set themselves the challenge
to go through undefeated
after finishing the home and
away season,’’ Fuller said.
‘‘I told them to just seize
the moment because there’s
a lot of older people out
there who never get the
chance to play in grand
finals.
‘‘They’re a good bunch of
kids who are prepared to run
and help each other and
work as a team.’’
Congupna led by 19 points
at half time and at one stage
in the third quarter
extended the margin to 33
points.
Brock Close and Doug
Bond kicked two consecutive
goals to leave Deniliquin
21 points and down
and with a glimmer of hope
at three-quarter-time.
Any hope of a Rams comeback
was ended when Congupna
kicked three goals to
one in the last to complete
the perfect season.
Midfielder BJ Squire
kicked three goals to be
awarded best on ground,
adding to his premiership
medal, league best and
fairest and goalkicking
award.
Victoria under-12 representative
Tom Fuller was
just as prominent with four
goals, while Tyler Pedretti,
Mitchell Baker, Curtley
Allen, Luke Walden and Jack
Hicks were other standouts.
Ben Thorpe, Charles Trottman
and Angus McCalman
were Deniliquin’s best.
