YVMDFNL Football Wrap
Wandin 12.17.89 defeated Warburton Millgrove 12.9.81. An extraordinary win by Wandin who displayed outstanding character to pull off what was the upset of the round. At half time Warby lead by just 4 points but Wandin did have more of the ball and did have 6 more scoring shots. Wandin played their best football in the 3rd booting 5 goals to 2 and at 3 quarter time it was Wandin that had the momentum with a 14 point lead. The last quarter was a battle of the backlines as goals were hard to come by. Wandin only booted 1 goal for the quarter while Warby did boot 2 majors but it wasn’t enough to stop Wandin’s warriors clinching their 3rd win of the season. After losing to ladder leaders last week by only 3 points, Warburton will be hugely disappointed with their effort. Wandin’s best: Daniel King, Mathew Peterson and Wayne Preston. Warburton Millgrove’s best: Adam Newing, Kurt Henderson and Ben Caneva.
Monbulk 24.11.155 defeated Silvan 8.10.58. Monbulk had this game wrapped up at half time as they booted 7 goals in the 1st quarter followed by another 7 in the second while Silvan could only manage 3 goals for the half. Monbulk extended their lead in the 2nd half adding a further 10 goals while Silvan was a little more competitive adding 5 majors. Monbulk’s Dylan Werts was outstanding booting 7 goals while Silvan’s David Bissels made the most of his chances kicking 6 of his teams 8 goals. Monbulk’s best: Dylan Werts, Jared Devers and Chris Mitchell. Silvan’s best: Darcy Wale, Stephen Andrews and Scott Stegheuis.
Mount Evelyn 19.15.129 defeated Healesville 11.14.80. Another workmanlike effort from Mount Evelyn as they start to get themselves ready for finals. Mount Evelyn played a consistent 4 quarter game and did blow the lead out to 8 goals by 3 quarter time. Despite the game being practically over at the last change, the last quarter was an entertaining affair with both teams booting 6 goals. Mount Evelyn look as though they will end up 4th or 5th on the ladder and will take on Olinda in their first final who they incidentally play in the last game of the year. Mount Evelyn’s best: Benjamin Farrugia, Jon Dalton and Callum Urquhart. Healesville’s best: Daniel Plozza, Dylan Anderson and Casey Adams.
Gembrook Cockatoo 21.25.151 defeated Upwey Tecoma 13.12.90. If the ladder stays the way it is (which is highly likely) then these sides will play each other in the first week of finals and Gembrook has put a real dent in the minds of Upwey after a dealing them a 61 point hiding. Gembrook got out to a 22 point lead at the half and possibly should have been further in front as they had 24 scoring shots to 12. Gembrook played a lot more direct football in the 2nd half and it showed on the scoreboard as they added a further 13 goals to Upwey’s 7. Gembrook’s Andrew Shipp continued his fine season adding a further 8 goals to his tally. Upwey was by no means bad but Gembrook was just so much better and will have got a real confidence boost for the finals with this win. Gembrook Cockatoo’s best: Andrew Walker, Stephen Robins and Craig Clarke. Upwey Tecoma’s best: Christopher Hayes, David Van Hoorn and Tom Hedge.
Woori Yallock 22.9.141 defeated Olinda Ferny Creek 14.12.96. As good as Olinda has been they are likely to find that come finals time, they still have a lot of work to do. Woori Yallock showed them a clean set of heels. The 1st half was reasonably even with Woori leading by just 3 goals. However, Woori Yallock blew the game open in the 3rd with a fantastic 9 goal term to stretch the margin to a match winning 9 goal lead. Olinda did outscore Woori in the last, 3 goals to 2 but this was always Woori Yallock’s game. Woori Yallock’s best: Brendan Sneddon, Patrick Sharp and Matthew Stolarczyk. Olinda Ferny Creek’s best: Nick Broomhall, Dylan Troutman and Scott Tregoning.
Division Two Round 17
Alexandra 17.8.110 defeated Kinglake 16.8.104. Alexandra got off the bottom of the ladder after a great win over Kinglake. Alex looked anything but a bottom side as they delivered a football lesson to the highly fancied Kinglake outfit. Alex held a slender lead at both quarter and half time, but it was Kinglake in the 3rd quarter that looked as though they may get on top. Kinglake booted 5 goals to 2 for the term and took a 2 goal lead into the last quarter. The last quarter was a beauty and it was arguably Alexandra’s best quarter for the year, they scored 7 majors to Kinglake’s 4 to wrestle back the lead and hold on to that lead for an outstanding victory. Alexandra’s best: Daniel Steel, Michael Bretherton and Damien Toomey. Kinglake’s best: Benjamin Munn, Jarrad Heal and Brent Gallichio (7 goals).
Yarra Junction 9.15.69 defeated Emerald 10.8.68. If Yarra Junction wanted a contest before finals then they certainly got that against Emerald who fell short by the narrowest of margins. Emerald jumped out of the blocks and before Yarra Junction knew it they were staring at a 4 goal deficit at quarter time. Junction had plenty of chances in the 2nd quarter but an inaccurate 3.10 still saw them trailing by 9 points at the half. Yarra Junction looked more polished in the 3rd and although they may have only kicked 3 goals they held Emerald to just 3 points and at 3 quarter time it was Junction by 9 points. Emerald outscored Junction 3 goals to 2 in the final quarter to just fall short of victory. Yarra Junction’s best: Nathan Fall, Curtis Wright and Brad Charman. Emerald’s best: Alexander Hellriegel, Jason Cousins and Callum Benoiton.
Seville 12.24.96 defeated Powelltown 6.12.48. It took Seville until the final quarter to shake off a determined Powelltown. Powelly held a 1 point lead at half time thanks to Seville’s inaccuracy as they had a scoreline of 3.11. Seville scored 3 goals to 1 in the 3rd and at the last change it was Seville by just 2 goals. Seville finally threw off the shackles in the last quarter to boot 6 goals to 1 to win the game but not in as a convincing style as they would have liked. Seville’s best: Brent Pereira, Mark Cecere and Chris Tanner. Powelltown’s best: Lindon Walker, Sam Camilleri and Luke Darwall.
Yarra Glen 16.14.110 defeated Belgrave 7.6.48. In what was somewhat a spiteful game it was Yarra Glen that emerged victorious after a terrific 2nd half of football. Belgrave was right in touch at half time trailing by 22 points. Yarra Glen held Belgrave scoreless in the 3rd quarter and should have blown Belgrave away after booting 3.8 for the quarter. Yarra Glen added another 4 goals in the last while Belgrave did manage 2 goals. Yarra Glen’s Ryan Kueffer was inspirational down forward with a best on ground performance that included 7 goals. Yarra Glen’s best: Ryan Kueffer, Peter Moate and David Watt. Belgrave’s best: Ben Fitzgerald, Nicholas Wakefield and Dean Lunn-Wilson.
Yea 15.6.96 defeated Thornton Eildon 10.15.75. Yea goes 1 game clear in 5th spot after their 21 point win over Thornton. Yea looked to have the edge all day even thought the margin was never a great one. Yea held onto a 3 to 4 goal lead for most of the day and every time Thornton threatened, Yea always had the answers to kill off the challenge. Yea play a vulnerable Kinglake next week and if they win that then they will play finals. Thornton takes on Powelltown, both teams 1 game out and looking to take Yea’s place. It should be a great last round before finals. Yea’s best: Peter Kiss, Rhys Koulson and James Clavarino.
