Hoops Partner With NT Police
ALICE SPRINGS CRIME PREVENTION UNIT/ HOOPS FOR HEALTH LAUNCH
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS CAMPAIGN MEDIA RELEASE
On Friday the 14th of June 2013 the Alice Springs Crime Prevention Unit launched its Community Partnerships Program with Hoops for Health at SadadeenPrimary School.
A Personal Safety presentation was delivered to the entire school by Youth Engagement Police Officer’s Senior Constable Brendan SHEPPARD, Constable 1/C Alphonsus SHIELDS, and Sport and Program Officer Constable Glenn WARRIOR.
The presentation educated students on how to stay safe and was followed by a sports session out on the basketball court were the message was reiterated to students using sport.
Hoops for Health mascot “Hooper” attended and interacted with the school students throughout the day.
The day ended with the 360 all stars “RaShaun the basketball man” hailed from New York captivating the entire school out on the basketball court with his freestyle basketball skills.
On Tuesday the 18th of June 2013 the Crime Prevention Unit attended the Gillen Primary and delivered the same program to students.
Over the 2 days a total of 197 students heard the police message.
The Alice Springs Crime Prevention Unit would like to thank Hoops for Health for providing their Mascot and Sport and Recreation Indigenous Coordinator Paul Murray in organising the 360 all stars to attend Sadadeen Primary.
Thank you to the 360 all stars and to the Artback NT: Arts Development and Touring for volunteering their time especially “RaShaun”.
The Launch is an Alice Springs Crime Prevention Unit initiative focused on developing partnerships with community organisations and using basketball to foster positive relationships between youths and police.
The role of the Sport and Engagement Officer is an exciting new initiative allowing Police to engage with youths and stake holders in delivering Crime Prevention Programs to the community.
