WNWBL Round 4 Wrap-up

Round 4 of the 2011 Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League took place over the weekend with 10 action packed games played at the Sydney University in Sydney.

The VIC Dandenong Rangers had another outstanding weekend, ensuring they remained on top of the ladder with three victories from their four games, but the upset of the season occurred when the home side Sydney Uni Flames handed the Rangers their first loss of the season.

Coming into the final round of the season the Flames were fourth on the ladder with only three wins for the year, but on their home floor, they managed to do what no other side had achieved in 2011 and knock off the Rangers, winning 54-48, behind 24 points and 17 rebounds from Liesl Tesch.

The win was one of three that the Flames recorded on the weekend, which helped push them into third place on the ladder.

The To Be Active Western Stars also had another winning weekend, for the fourth straight round, they were able to overcome all but the Rangers, and hang on to their second place on the ladder.

The Stacks Goudkamp Bears were unable to avoid dropping to a final round placing of fourth, after a weekend which saw them register only one win, while the Minecraft Comets came so close to knocking off both the Flames and the Bears, but despite outstanding play from Bridie Kean, could not get across the final hurdle to secure another win.

The final places in the 2011 regular season saw the VIC Dandenong Rangers finish first with a record of 15-1, the To Be Active Western Stars (12-4), Sydney University Flames (6-10), Stacks Goudkamp Bears (6-10), Minecraft Comets (1-15).

The action now shifts to the Northern Suburbs Basketball Centre in NSW for the finals, on the weekend of 23-25 September.
