Regional Teams from the North and Mayo came together along with our own DDS Select teams on Saturday to play each other and provide some great games of basketball in this end of season bonus games for players who made the cut to play on these teams.

Donegal u16 Boys Select  34    Belfast U16 Boys RDS   53

First Up was the DDS Select against Belfast RDS a game which promised much but due to the change of day and venue meant that the Select team had to field without thier Northstar Derry players and one or two others who couldnt make it. The Belfast lads were led well by R Berzins were too strong for the select team and won 53-34 with all but one getting on the score sheet while playing a nice brand of basketball . Sean Mc Gettigan 10pts from Blaze was the Select teams main threat to the basket and along with John Mc Intyre(Blaze) and Mathew Oates(Donegal Town) were the main men for the select team with the loss of the excellent Thomas Vaughan a big blow to their chances.

With Belfast unable to field a team in the girls host club Donegal Town B.C. along with a few guests were next up and play the Mayo Girls. The game started of at a great pace and was end to end with the Mayo girls taking an early 3 point lead going in at end of  the quarter 10-13 with G Flynn hitting 6 of the points. A great reply by the Donegal Girls saw a great quarter form Blazes Aisling Nee hittng a lovely 3 pointer  mid quarter along with the impressive duo of Holly Marie Carty and Claudia Coughlin ( Colaiste Cholmcile, Ballyshannon) to bring the game in a close 21-22 for the host team. But thats were the game as a contest would be closest as the Mayo Girls found another gear to kick on and win convincingly in the end 58-36. Nee, Carty and Coughlin along with Darian Ryan were the home teams best performers while the Mayo Girls had good performaces from E Judge, E Flanery, A Moran and  K Moorre.

The main game for the Girls with Mayo traveling to take on our Select Team made up of players from Blaze B.C. Sligo Giant Warriors, Colaiste Cholmcile Ballyshannon and Donegal Town B.C. teams. Having trained together for the last 4/5 weeks this was a great way to finish the season for both these sets of  players. While there is little on the side of tournaments at this level its a great way to bring together the top players in both areas to compete at a higher level than club basketball. This game was really tough with great D played by both teams and a real intensity to the game too. The visitors from Mayo took the challenge to the home side and led 10-3 after the first with K Moore scoring her sides first 8 points with some great scores. The select gradually got themselves into the game and had a strong 2nd quarter with Claudia Coughlin being her sides main threat to the basket. Aisling Nee began to control the game for the home side and along with the Leaghy Sisters got themselves back into the game with a great press which the Mayo girls struggled to brek down.. Another strong quarter in the 3rd form the Select side with Coughlin, Carty and Darian Regan pulled the home side 35-18 in front. This saw a great reaction from the Mayo Girls who rallied to win the last quarter 18-10 but couldnt get the game back on terms and the select team ran out winners in a great game.

Donegal Town B.C . 33     Belfast U16 Boys  RDS 30

This was another excellent game with both sides defenses playing really well.  The Belfast lads edged in front with 6-4 lead at the first with little between the sides. The Town's guest player John Mc Gettigan (Blaze) was having a great game and took the game to the Belfast lads and along with the impressive Patrick Reid and Mathew Oates who were very hard to break down in  D.  All square at half time says it all and it would take a bit of magic to separate these 2 well matched teams. Another tight quarter in the third saw Donegal just edge  in front again by 20-19. The home side got a great start to the last and eased 8 points ahead with little time remaining but  K Mc kough and R Berzins werent lying down and  were bringing it to Donegal Town now scoring 4 baskets to level the game. With pocession in the Home teams hands they waited till the last seconds to shoot and boy what a finish as John Mc Intye nailed the 3 pointer to secure the win leaving the Belfast lads with no time to reply. Well done to both teams in what was a great game.
