James inspired UEL win BUCS Cup

UEL started strongly with two pointers from James and Channel Clarke. In the first few minutes, an eager Royal Holloway team, found themselves committing three fouls in quick succession as UEL made quick breaks down the centre of the court. Converting Royal Holloway’s mistakes to points, earned UEL a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The away side continued to play their best attack on the quick break, with James and Naomi Hart linking well to increase UEL’s lead by the end of the second quarter.

As the Royal Holloway supporters found their voices it seemed so did their team, changing the tactic to high overhead balls into the towering forwards. Despite strong defence from Zara Dennis and Folashade Thompson, the third quarter belonged to the home side who took the lead for the first time in the game.

Only one point separated the two sides as the fourth quarter started, with excitement levels high both sides fouled needlessly in a tit for tat few minutes. With both teams exchanging baskets, neither side could gain the momentum need to finish. A UEL basket in the closing few seconds, sent the match into overtime.

After an exhausting four quarters of play, the BUCS Cup champions would be decided by five minutes of extra time. UEL’s fitness levels and the determination inspired by Coach Rocky Davids, gave UEL the upperhand. Royal Holloway scored first and had the lead until a massive two pointer from Dennis put the blue side infront, a frustrated Royal Holloway committed five fouls allowing UEL to rack up their lead through free shots. A jubilant UEL women’s basketball team and supporters celebrated the final whistle, as UEL’s women’s basketball team became the first women's team in UEL to win a BUCS cup. In the tightest game of the season, UEL emerged victorious through determination, team work and passion and for that they are truly champions.
