FSM Basketball Federation's 2005 Annual Report

FSM Basketball Federation
2005: Annual Report

This was a challenging and exciting year for basketball in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

The highlight of 2005 was the selection of national basketball teams, with players from all islands in the FSM eligible to play for their nation at the South Pacific Mini-Games. This is an important step for FSM basketball, and sets the tone for all FSM sports teams that national selection, choosing the most talented athletes from throughout the nation, is best. National teams also help in nation building and creating national pride.

Although 2005 marked the first time that a women's team participated at the South Pacific level, a necessary and important step in FSM basketball, opportunities and interest in women's participation still languishes.

Pohnpei State has the most active women's basketball program, due to both opportunities and the attitude of allowing girls to play sports.

Chuuk, has experienced difficulty growing women's basketball. Even though the Chuuk Basketball Association (CBA) actively supports women's basketball and Chuuk has more than 50% of the nation's population, the state struggles to field women's teams for competitions in state and a state team for the FSM Games and Micronesian Games.

There are dedicated individuals who are trying to give girls opportunities in basketball and other sports, but the nation needs greater awareness of the inequality of opportunity and provide more support for female participation in physical activities.

In spite of these difficulties, the FSM has good female basketball players who possess athleticism and are able to get instruction and develop solid basketball skills. It is hoped that 2006 will be a breakout year for FSM women's basketball with increased opportunities and support for women in sports.

The FSM is very proud of Ramsey Joab who officiated at the South Pacific Mini-Games basketball tournament. Deemed one of the best referees, Ramsey was selected to officiate the bronze medal game. Congratulations to Ramsey and hopefully there will be others that follow his example.

Congratulations are also in order for newly elected basketball association officers in several states. We know these new people will bring fresh ideas and approaches that will improve the management and organization of the sport throughout the islands.

This year saw more youth basketball leagues and tournaments throughout the FSM, with competitions for 18.Under, 15/Under and 12/Under. This is important and the FSM Basketball Federation (FSMBF) encourages this trend, hoping that 2006 sees even more opportunities for youth to develop their basketball skills and knowledge.

Thanks to FIBA Oceania's technical workshop, the FSM Basketball Federation (FSMBF) now has an active web site where basketball news and photos can be shared with the world.

2005 saw visits by Zone Development Officer Stuart Manwaring. His expertise, friendly and positive approach to instruction, based on solid knowledge and experience makes him an invaluable resource for us.

At this time Stuart is ill and the FSM Basketball community wishes him a speedy and complete recovery.
