Youth Tournament Championship
On Saturday 14th June 2008 the 1st Championship matches for both the mens and womens competition of the Yap Youth Basketball Tournament were held. Played under lights in the evening a great crowd as well as the local radio stationed turned out for the 2 matches. This was the first match of a best of 3 finals series to be held throughout the following weeks.
In the women's match Colonia defeated Tamil in what was an entertaining match which demonstrated the improvement and steps forward women's basketball in Yap has taken in the past in the past few years.
Game 1 of the men's finals series saw Midori defeat Tamil. Going into overtime after the scores were tied at 68 a piece at the end of regulation, it was 2 free throws that made the differance in the extra period, giving Midori the win, 70-68.
The championships are well organised and featured an opening ceremony before the beginning of the matches to introduce the teams and make official announcements. The Championships will continue next weekend as game 2 of the Best of 3 series will be held. We hope to see you all there!
