Weather forces change of plans

BASKETBALL Fiji was forced to postpone the National
Club Championship after rained made the Lautoka multi purpose courts
unplayable. A total of 23 matches were placed before the organisers were force to pull the plug on the tournament because the
surface had become slippery.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the safety of the players was taken into consideration.

"Its unfortunate that we had to call off the tournament," Puamau said. "The games were played in the morning. But than the rain came and we decided to call it off. "Its disappointing but beyond our control. "No one can control the weather. The problem was that the surface had become slippery. "This was very dangerous for the players."

The tournament will be shifted to Suva. Puamau said they hoped to increase the number of the teams. He said they would start fresh with the tournament. "The matches that were played today would not count," Puamau said. "It will be a fresh start. We will increase the number of teams. "We have the indoor facility in Suva so the weather will be no problem." After the rain ceased some teams played friendly matches.

Puamau said it was good to see the teams showing interest in the sport.
