Whites upset Wed C

Vika Fifita led by example and scored the most points to guide her National Development Players White team to a 26-21 upset win over favorites Wed C in their opening match of the Post Fiji Boston Basketball Championship yesterday. The sixth former of Latter Day Saints slotted three 3-pointers and four 2-pointers to help her side win. Wed C were the much fancied side heading into the game with the likes of upcoming players in Mere Naisoro, Seini Dobui and Mareta. Tournament cordinator, Eroni Cinavilakeba, said, “It was a see-saw affair. “Both sides were evenly matched and NDP Whites was able to create some gaps in the last two minutes of play.” In the other women’s match that was played at Ed’s Court in Raiwaqa, the Golden Bati defeated the Knights 30-8.  “It was a one-sided affair with Golden Bati leading the way. In fact they started the campaign on slow note but the experience of the Koyamainavure sisters and Brittany Hazelman as captain saw them come back to dictate the game.”  Despite the impressive performances by the two sides, Cinavilakeba says it is ‘tad too early to pick out the likely winners.’  “We have other women’s teams playing on Saturday in the likes of the NDP Black, Raiwai and Knights so we will have to wait and see how those games go first.”  The men’s will take to court today and stiff competition is high in the agenda.
