Shaq launches attaq on Easter Title

Last year's Easter Bas-ketball Champions, Shaq Attaq, are fiercely holding onto their crown as this year's Easter competition speeds up. Shaq, with seasoned campaigners like David Whippy, Laisiasa Puamau and Adrian Bossley, went home with another title under their belt on Saturday evening after winning the Boston tournament at Ed's Court and $600 richer. They played against the Bryceland Warriors and came out winners after a nail-biting game. Both teams were tired after three days of tough, unrelenting competition. The days were filled with challenges that not only tested their skills and fitness but also their will-power and team determination. Registered as one of the powerhouses in basketball, Shaq showed they were the topnotch team to beat when it came to high competition. The National Develop-ment Players White's won the women's division after beating Golden Bati 25-22 and went home $400 richer. It was a scramble of skill, willpower and dexterity. The team made up mostly of young, aspiring players showed the older teams what they were made of especially after they beat Wed C last Thursday, a team made up mostly of current and ex-national players in a score of Mere Naisoro, Seini Dobui and Agnes Sokosoko. Tournament co-ordinator Eroni Cinavilakeba commented that both teams were evenly matched but NDP created gaps to pull through in the last few minutes. "It was a very tough competition and it went very well," said Cinavilakeba. The Boston Basketball Association had been planning last week's tournament for quite a while and Cinavilakeba was very happy with the outcome. This was the first time the association had organised such an event. "We had 16 men's teams and six women's teams," said Cinavilakeba. The three-day challenge, which was played at the Indian College courts, International High School courts and Ed's court, was a great build-up for the up-coming Easter Games. It was quite difficult predicting which team was going to win because all the teams had done well in many competitions that had been running in the last couple of weeks. The Laucala champs, Saints led by national captain Leo Whippy and Shaq Attaq were teams that were considered powerhouses. While in the Raiwaqa arena, Bryceland Warriors, Boston and Tu Vili trophy champs Veterans were geared up and ready for the competition. "The competition was very stiff," said Cinavila-keba. Cinavilakeba also commented on the great turn-out at the courts. "There were a lot of spectators and each team had their own cheering crew, it was great," he said.
