Top seeds advance

TOP seeds Saints, Westpac, Pitbulls and Shaq Attaq were the likeliest teams to pull through last night's quarter-finals. Shaq Attaq as of last week changed their name to Barbarians and are guaranteeing a tough final at the Vodafone Arena for the rest of the teams in the competition. However, Saints captain and Suva-laucala basketball players association president, Leonard Whippy said that they would try to keep to their target of being unbeaten throughout the league. Saints, who are the top seeds of the league competitions, played against Air Iguana who are sitting at eighth position. It would have been an easy battle for the boys from the Latter-Day Saints while the match of the night was between fourth seed, Pitbulls and third seed, Barbarians. Frank Saketa's Westpac, who are new to the association have also been a powerful side and are expected to feature in next week's semi-finals, said Whippy. This will be the Suva-Laucala Basketball Players association last round of league competitions for this year. "We are wrapping up our competitions. It has been a very productive year, lots of developments and new teams forming. It has really been great," said Whippy. Whippy also has an U22 tournament in the pipeline and hopes to run the competitions next month. He is still in the process of drawing up the plans for the competitions and inviting as many interested participants. "For now we are just looking forward to the semis and finals and I hope the best teams wins," said Whippy. Whippy who is also a member of the National mens basketball team is training very hard with his team mates and is concentrating on achieving the ultimate fitness level as they will be defending their Pacific Games title in New Caledonia next year. The team will be featuring the same players from the 2007 PG gold winning team.
