Champs face Barbarians

DEFENDING champions Saints are a game away from retaining the Suva/ Laucala Basketball Association league title. The champions face in-form Barbarians in what is expected to be a fast-paced and physical encounter at the Vodafone Arena, tonight.

Saints will be led by its experienced campaigners like Wayman Whippy, Jese Sikivou, Tui Sikivou and Adrian Bossley while the Barbarians will depend heavily on national reps Lai Puamau, Sikeli Mara and Baravi Thaman.

Barbarians qualified after beating Idaman in the semis while the Saints earned an automatic qualification by finishing top of the pile after two months of league matches.

Suva/ Laucala Basketball Association president Leonard Whippy said both teams Saints and Barbarians finished with 11 points in the three-team A-grade league. He said Saints and Barbarians met twice in the league with both teams notching a win each.

"We're expecting a very competitive final because both teams have a lot of national reps," Whippy said. "The last two encounters between these teams have been close and the final is expected to be physical with a lot of contact."

Whippy said seven teams would represent Suva/ Laucala Basketball Association in the upcoming Easter Championship. "We have the three A-grade teams taking part and the top four in the B-grade qualify as well," he said.

Tonight's draw

6pm: Westpac - Noobies (B-grade semi-final)

7pm: Dragons - Baseliners

8pm: Saints - Barbarians (final)
