B'ball on the rise in Nadi

IN A bid to make the western schools more competitive in the Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship, Basketball Fiji launched an under-17 tournament in Nadi yesterday.

The two-day event sponsored by Edupia Company has five schools participating at the Nadi International School court.

BF development officer Laisiasa Puamau said Suva-based schools were dominant in the annual national meet in the past and they wanted to help other schools become more competitive.

Puamau said there was an abundance of talent in the West and it needed development programs to help them shine.

He added the inaugural tournament would help the western schools prepare for the secondary schools championship in August.

"There are a lot of undeveloped players here with a lot of potential and we recognise their talent and want to help them," Puamau said.

"We lacked funding before but with the sponsor's (Edupia Company) coming onboard, we plan to raise awareness about the sports in the West."
