Mights, Roses rule

MIGHTY Mights and Paparazzi Roses won the inaugural under-18 Super League competition at the Eds Court in Raiwaqa yesterday.

The Fiji U20 rep Isireli Vuetibau led Mighty Mights proved too strong for the Mataika Koyamainavure's Marist Brothers.

The Raiwaqa-based team won the boys showdown 51-32. Mighty Mights player Filimoni Seru was named the best male player of the tournament following his brilliant performance throughout the tournament.

In the girls division, Grace Taito led Chosen were unable to hold the tough Paparazzi Roses, losing 46-33 in a close encounter.

National rep Miliakere Koyamainavure led Roses, which was dominated by players from the Adi Cakobau School U19 team, managed to contain the Chosen onslaught to put their names in the history books. Seini Vunibaka was awarded the player of the tournament in the girls division.

Meanwhile, the tournament organised by the Raiwaqa Basketball Association had 14 boys and girls teams playing under the new man-to-man defensive play pattern. Association president Saula Koroi said they were happy to see the progress made by the players in adapting to the new strategy.

"The last day of the tournament was very exciting with intense competition recorded from the teams in the final stages," he said.

"The players today (yesterday) were much better in the new man-to-man strategy which showed the coaches did their job well in teaching them the new style."

However, Koroi said, there were some areas they have recognised during the tournament which needed to be fixed.

"But overall the tournament was a success and we thank the sponsors for helping us host this event."

The winner in the both divisions walked away with the Kauvesi Trophy and $200 cash prize money while the runner-ups received 15 movie vouchers.
