HIV Prevention Message Delivered During 2011 Twisties National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship

2011 Twisties National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship began its tournament with a key note speech addressed by Mr. Luke Nayasa of Fiji Network for People living with HIV (FJN+). In his message, Luke highlighted the importance of discipline not just inside the field but outside the field as well and empowering female players.

he theme for this year’s campaign was “HIV Stops with Me- Be A Leader Promote Basketball Prevent HIV”. Closed to 300 Secondary School Basketball Players were reached during the three day Safe Games Outreach Campaign held at the Vodafone Arena from 29th – 31st August 2011.

At the Outreach, STOP HIV Champions Mr. Iliesa Namosimalua (athletic), Seini Dobui (Basketball) and Mr. Lai Puamau (Basketball) played a lead role along with Praneel Magan (Peer Educator) and Luke Nayasa (HIV Advocate) together with team of STOP HIV Volunteers delivering prevention messages to participating school teams at the Vodafone Arena.

The Outreach team uses various strategies such as issuance of red ribbons, organizing group HIV sessions with teams, answering of quiz questions, and demonstration of condoms to senior players and display of STOP HIV Banners at various game venue spots.

The tournament competition had 20 Secondary School participated and were categorized as Under 19, 17 and 15 for boys and girls.

This is the second year, the STOP HIV Team had partnered with Fiji Amateur Basketball Federation to deliver the HIV prevention key messages through the sports of Basketball.

The STOP HIV Team hopes to conduct its road show campaign at a district level in the coming year to allow other participating school players to excess to information.
