B'ball development pleases sponsors

THE sponsors of secondary schools basketball has applauded the development work done by Basketball Fiji.

Through development clinics, workshops and competitions, Basketball Fiji has helped increase the number of schools competing in the national competition.

The Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship begins on Monday and on Thursday, Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji handed over a cheque for $10,000 to the organisers.

This year's competition will see 54 teams compete in the event and the number is an increase compared to the 47 teams last year.

Goodman Fielder Fiji general manager Shaun Joils said this was the fifth year Tuckers was associated with Basketball Fiji and they were proud to continue their partnership.

"Basketball Fiji has done a good job with their development work and in getting more schools involved in the sport," Joils said.

"We are proud to be associated with the tournament which is not a profit generating exercise but a means to get the schoolchildren of Fiji into competitive sports and away from mischief."

Basketball Fiji president and Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said the money given by Tucker's was not a handout but an investment.

"On behalf of Basketball Fiji and all those associated with the sport, I would like to thank you for your support," Naivalurua said.

"It is very difficult to run sports without finance so this is considered to be an investment, not only into the tournament but also for our future national reps."

The tournament will start at the Vodafone Arena on Monday.
