Taito leads U19 girls

GRACE Taito has been given the privilege to captain the Fiji U19 girl's basketball team to the Oceania Youth Championship in Australia next month.

The 18-year-old who was one of Fiji's two representatives to the Singapore Friendship Youth Camp in 2009 is one of the experienced players in the squad.

Also making the cut in the final team is 13-year-old Tiyana Kainamoli who captained the Fiji U16 team to the FIBA Youth Three on Three Basketball tournament last June.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School student Wilma Cawi is one of the surprise names in the team. Wilma, a star at the Coca Cola Games athletics competition has now excelled in another sport.

Fiji U19 girl's coach Laisiasa Puamau said the players were the best available.

"This is the best team we have selected at the moment. Grace will be leading the team, she has the experience and is one of our key players," he said.

"Wilma Cawi has shown her potential at training and she deserved her spot in the team. She is a good player and I believe she will be an asset to the team," Puamau added.

Fiji U19 girl's team: Grace Taito (C), Tiyana Kainamoli, Kelera Koyaminavure, Donnis Kainamoli, Georgina Balenacagi, Maraia Naulivou, Elizabeth Seru, Josifini Fifita, Wilma Cawi; Non-travelling reserves: Vika Ramara, Leba Korovou
